An immersion session in strategic communication thinking, targeted planning and advising

Planning Communications to Support Organizational Objectives

About the Seminar

The original two-day format of this workshop has been combined into a one-day session that blends with our one-day staff consulting skills seminar to form a two-day immersion experience for those communicators who want to learn and grow strategic communication thinking skills and polish their advice-to-management skills over just two days away from the office. The sessions may be taken separately or in sequence when offered.

An organization’s operating plan only succeeds as documented when all members of the enterprise understand what needs to be done, why it needs to be done and how they are expected to behave to achieve it. That level of understanding only exists when a communication strategy has been anchored to an organization’s operating plan.

Since 1984, “Planning Communications to Support Organizational Objectives,” has challenged participants, during a two-day session, to stretch and reinvent themselves. Communicators in organizations from across the U.S. and Canada consistently rate this session as the foundation experience for growing one’s career from technician to operating management advisor.

"I loved the session leader's
direct style. He challenged us to 'think
and act' and not 'react'
to communication needs on the job.
We were drained at the end. Thanks!"

The seminar includes lectures with examples, broad participant discussion and extensive hands-on experiences using the tools and processes presented. Participants learn to translate operating objectives into what must be communicated with whom, to define desired audience behaviors in operating plans, to evaluate the most effective means of message exchanges and how to predetermine the most probable outcomes of specific message exchanges. The key tool used in the session is The Values/Actions Communication Planning Matrix, a copyrighted communication decision process. Participants receive a three-ring binder that contains not only the planning Matrix but also an Adverse Consequences Evaluation model, a Behavior Identification model, the Behavior Pyramid model, an Audience Analysis worksheet and pre-printed summary notes on workshop discussion topics.

The learning in this seminar includes:
-How to define desired stakeholder behaviors in operating goals
-How to develop operations-based internal and external messages based upon defined, desired stakeholder behaviors
-How to develop an operations-based communication strategy based upon defined, desired stakeholder behaviors
-How to pre-determine the likely (positive/negative) consequences of specific message exchanges between managers and stakeholders
-How to present an operations-based communication strategy to an operating manager
